About
This cocktail was created by Douglas Ankrah at Townhouse in London after he conceived the drink during a 2002 trip to Cape Town. It was originally called the Maverick Martini after a nightclub he frequented there, before Ankrah gave it the much more provocative name that stuck. Vanilla and passionfruit were at the heart of the original, along with the now-signature glass of Champagne served on the side. Ankrah’s recipe published in his 2004 book Shaken & Stirred did not include lime, relying instead on the acidity of fresh passionfruit, although lime has become common in later versions, including the Difford’s Guide adaptation and the one I made here. The Champagne is meant to stay separate rather than being poured into the cocktail, giving you a dry, bubbly contrast to all that passionfruit and vanilla.Cheers y’all!
