Created in 2016 by David Valdez at Simbal (Little Tokyo, Los Angeles; now closed), this refreshing summer drink was listed as “Sandia Negroni.” Despite not being a Negroni, it is a cross-cultural mash-up: an Italian name with Mexican liquor from a Southeast Asian restaurant in a Japanese-American neighborhood.Cheers y’all!
Ingredients
- 1 oz · 30 mltequila
- 1 oz · 30 mlaperol
- 1 oz · 30 mlfresh watermelon juice
- ½ oz · 15 mlfresh lime juice
- ¼ oz · 7.5 mlginger syrup
Method

Add all ingredients to shaker tin.

Add ice and shake until chilled.

Strain into glass over fresh ice.

Garnish with mint and watermelon ball soaked in Fresno chili juice (optional).
